Pope Francis has invited the whole Church to a process of active listening - listening to each other and, above all, listening to the Holy Spirit. And why? So we might learn - once more - how we are to live as Church, as missionary disciples, alive in Christ and sharing his Gospel.
The process begins in October 2021 in the local Churches of the world - in the dioceses and their parishes and other communities. And then gradually it continues until in October 2023 and October 2024 when bishops and others meet in formal session in Rome to consider what has been heard and learnt.
A summary of the process can be found here.
And fuller, more technical, documents that established the process can be found here and here.
In preparation for the beginning of the Synod, Pope Francis addressed a meeting in Rome, and returned to the subject the next day in his homily at Mass. His words help open up the spiritual richness of what the Synod process offers us.
The first stage of the process ran from October 2021 to February 2022.
Instrumentum Laboris (Working Document for the first session of the Synod - October 2023)
In June 2023 the working paper for use by all those attending the Synod for the first session of the Synod in October 2023.
The Synod has been prepared for by consultation, collaboration, prayer and reflection across the world. The working paper is fruit of that reflection and helps highlight where continued reflection is needed. It can be read and downloaded here.
